The deputy National Communication officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale has debunked the claims that John Mahama and the NDC would cancel the Free Senior High School policy.
Speaking on the State of Affairs on GHOne TV with Lantam Papanko, Mr. Basintale stated that a video in circulation suggesting that John Mahama would stop the Free SHS program if he becomes the next president is a palpable falsehood.
Malik Basintale reiterated that John Mahama and the NDC would improve upon the Free SHS policy.
According to him, the Free Senior High School policy has come to stay.
“John Mahama has said he would improve upon Free SHS, Free SHS has come to stay because, in 2016, we (NDC) started Free SHS for day students”, he added.
The NDC Deputy Communication Officer further indicated that it is pathetic how the NPP is unable to differentiate between improve and cancel.
“God willing when we improve upon Free SHS, one of the people we would use to test are Napo, Bawumia, and Nana Addo, they must become students of John Mahama’s improve Free SHS so they understand review and cancellation”, he added.
The Government of Ghana abolished fees for Senior High School (SHS) as of the 2017-18 school year, in line with the ruling party’s campaign promise.
Under the new policy, the government covers all fees for students admitted to public senior and vocational high schools, including boarding fees, meals, textbooks, and other charges.
This major policy initiative provides a unique opportunity to study the impact and implementation of secondary school fee abolition in real-time.
But the policy since its inception has faced challenges such as inadequate learning materials, classrooms, and others which has painted the initiative otherwise.
