In a rapidly evolving digital era, staying relevant in the media industry requires adaptability, innovation, and a keen understanding of emerging trends. Ghanaian media mogul Nathan Kwabena Adisi, popularly known as Bola Ray, epitomizes these principles.
In the premiere episode of Spotlight Spin with host Etornam Kumashie, Bola Ray shared his insights on reinvention, longevity, and the balance between authenticity and change in the modern media landscape.
Reflecting on his 25-year journey, the celebrated broadcaster and entrepreneur highlighted the impact of technological advancements on the industry. “I started off with folks in my time playing vinyl and cassettes,” he recalled. “But because evolution happened and they didn’t keep up with the times, they’ve gone under.” His statement underscores a harsh reality—those who fail to adapt risk being left behind.
From traditional radio and television to the rise of digital streaming and social media, the way audiences consume content has shifted dramatically. Bola Ray’s success lies in his ability to evolve while maintaining his unique voice. “It is important, it is imperative for one to upgrade, to reset, and to keep up with the times,” he emphasized.
While embracing change is essential, Bola Ray stressed the importance of staying true to one’s identity. For media personalities and content creators, balancing originality with current trends can be challenging. “You don’t just have to say, ‘I’m old school, so I won’t change.’ Learn what the young folks are involved in. They keep up with the trends, and they help you get energized,” he advised.
He also shared how learning from younger generations—including his own children—has helped him stay relevant. By immersing himself in evolving media spaces, he has successfully navigated different phases of his career without losing his authenticity.
However, the digital age comes with its challenges, including misinformation. Bola Ray recounted a personal experience where false reports claimed he had been arrested. “I was in New Jersey on vacation, and suddenly, I saw messages saying I had been arrested for something I didn’t even know about,” he said. The incident highlighted the double-edged nature of modern media—while it offers vast opportunities for visibility, it also demands vigilance against false narratives.
To young media professionals, Bola Ray’s advice is simple: be bold, adaptable, and always willing to learn. “Many young people are timid because of cultural constraints, but you need to have a voice. Be assertive, but always be respectful,” he encouraged.
