Former Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has defended Kennedy Agyapong’s call for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to address its internal challenges before going ahead with its presidential primaries.
Dr. Boakye-Danquah, speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Monday, June 23, said Mr. Agyapong’s concerns were valid, emphasizing the need to prioritise unity and proper groundwork before electing a flagbearer.
According to him, the party needs someone who can help them win the 2028 elections.
“The NPP does not just want a flagbearer, we want the president of the Republic of Ghana. So our goal is not just to elect a flagbearer who cannot win an election, but the goal is to ensure that we elect a flagbearer who can win an election, so that the campaign at the grassroots will not be difficult.”

He added that issues raised in the Mike Ocquaye Committee’s report on the party’s internal affairs point to the need for careful planning ahead of the primaries.
According to Dr. Boakye-Danquah, Kennedy Agyapong’s proposal suggests that the party should focus on conducting polling station elections; likely in the third quarter of this year; before selecting a flagbearer.
He recommended that the presidential primaries be pushed to either the end of the third quarter of 2026 or the beginning of the second quarter of that year.
He added, “That has been some of the issues that came out of the Mike Ocquaye’s report. So the call by Honorable Kennedy to the point is to ensure that we do the polling station in elections first, sometime it may be in the third quarter, and then give ample time to ensure that everybody is able to tour around the country, share their messages to the grassroots and the rank-and-file of the party, and push the flagbearership election either to the until the end of the third quarter of 2026, or the very beginning of the second quarter of 2026.”
Kennedy Agyapong, a former Member of Parliament for Assin Central and a flagbearer hopeful of the NPP, raised concerns over the timing of the party’s upcoming presidential primaries, warning that unresolved internal issues could cost the party victory in the 2028 general elections.
