Muntaka Mubarak, the Minister-Designate for the Interior, has reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the issue of prison overcrowding in Ghana.
During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Mubarak highlighted the importance of leveraging the “Justice for All” initiative as a key strategy in decongesting the country’s prisons.
“The ‘Justice for All’ project was one that was so helpful, where judges moved into the prisons and dealt with remand cases, expediting their resolution,” Mubarak said.
He emphasized the need for renewed collaboration with the Attorney General and the Chief Justice to fully utilize this initiative, which has proven effective in handling prolonged remand cases and ensuring timely justice.
In addition to expediting justice, Mubarak stressed the need for a multi-pronged approach to improve conditions in Ghana’s prisons. He called for public-private partnerships (PPPs) to enhance the welfare of inmates, including better nutrition and skill acquisition programs, which could equip them for reintegration into society after serving their sentences.
“I’m sure when we implement these strategies, partnering with the private sector, ensuring they are well-fed, and helping them acquire skills, it will lessen the burden on the men and women managing the prisons, while also treating our compatriots in a more humane manner,” he added.
Prison overcrowding remains a pressing issue in Ghana, with many inmates living in poor and dehumanizing conditions. The Justice for All initiative, which began in 2007, was designed to address the backlog of remand cases by bringing justice to the doorstep of those awaiting trial. Mubarak’s plans signal a potential reinvigoration of the program under his leadership, should his nomination be approved.
