The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, has threatened to take action against contractors who fail to deliver on critical infrastructure projects in 35 municipalities, despite receiving payments.
The Minister has warned that contracts will be terminated if contractors fail to meet their obligations. He explained that some contractors have received payments but have not completed the required work, hindering progress in critical infrastructural development.
Speaking to the media after a tour of the Western and Central Regions, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah expressed his Ministry’s resolve to address the lackadaisical performance of some contractors. He noted that some contractors intentionally delay projects to secure additional funds from the government, which the Ministry will not tolerate.
“Some have been good, some have not been good. Where it’s not been good, we have put in place measures to ensure that nobody frustrates the government and the people who must be enjoying these projects. We have observed that some contractors who have some agreement with the ministry to work, having been paid what they need under the agreement, have failed to deliver as required.”
The Minister emphasized that the Ministry will no longer tolerate such behavior.
“They collect the money and the work is not being done. Where you expect a higher percentage of the work to have been done, there’s nothing there. And what we have been saying is that we can no longer continue to tolerate that.
Mensah Korsah cautioned that contractors who exhibit poor performance will face legal consequences, including being barred from participating in future procurement processes.
“The ministry is building records of all those people and we intend to apply the law to make sure that they don’t even come near our procurement processes next time, let alone have any jobs with us. And again, within the same space, we’ve had the cause to terminate some arrangements because they failed to deliver.”
