The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 20-year-old woman, Promise Yayra Asamani, for allegedly spreading false information about an Uber driver on social media.
According to the police, the suspect was taken into custody on Saturday, March 14, 2026, by the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team after failing to respond to an initial police invitation issued on March 12.
Promise is accused of posting a viral message on Snapchat falsely labeling 43-year-old Uber driver Selasie Kwaku Anthonio as a “murderer and a thief.”
The post included his photograph and vehicle registration number (AD-1479-25) and claimed he used signal jammers and carried offensive weapons.
Investigations revealed that the claims were based solely on an account provided by Promise’s sister, Stephanie Asamani, following a verbal dispute during a ride on March 9. Promise admitted she had no evidence to support the allegations and published the post “to create awareness.”
The false post had immediate consequences for the driver. Uber suspended his account, cutting off his primary source of income, and he received multiple distressing calls, raising concerns for his personal safety and fear of mob justice.
Promise Yayra Asamani was granted police enquiry bail on March 16, 2026, while investigations continue. The Ghana Police Service has used the case to caution the public that publishing false news is a punishable offense under Ghanaian law.
