Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the leading contender to represent the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2028 general elections, with new polling suggesting he would defeat Julius Debrah should the National Democratic Congress (NDC) present him as its flagbearer.
The September 2025 National Tracking Poll by Global InfoAnalytics shows that 57% of NPP delegates prefer Bawumia as the party’s next presidential candidate, ahead of Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, who secured 29%.
Other aspirants, including former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, recorded less than 5%.
When paired against potential NDC flagbearers, the survey revealed that Bawumia would beat Julius Debrah but lose to Haruna Iddrisu and Cassiel Ato Forson.
The poll comes as the NPP seeks to recover from its 2024 defeat, which saw John Dramani Mahama reclaim power and the NDC win control of Parliament.
The party’s seats fell from 137 in 2020 to about 88 in 2024, with sharp vote declines across Greater Accra, Central, and even the Ashanti Region.
Regional results from the latest survey show Bawumia well ahead of Agyapong across key areas, including Ashanti (63% vs 25%), Eastern (61% vs 27%), and Northern (68% vs 22%).
The poll, conducted between September 15 and 25, 2025, sampled over 5,000 respondents nationwide, with a margin of error of ±2.5%.
