The Electoral Commission once again has had to withdraw the Constitutional Instrument (CI) it laid in parliament about 3 weeks ago.
The commission had to withdraw the CI from Parliament last week over some mistakes.
The commission however relaid the CI the following day. The EC per the CI is seeking to exclude the current voters’ ID card and birth certificate as a primary document for identification in compilations of the new register.
The new Instrument however still has the two documents in the schedule as valid documents for the exercise.
Parliament’s subsidiary legislation Committee on Monday met a team from the EC led by deputy commissioner Dr Bossman Asare where it emerged the required corrections were not effected before the CI was relaid last week.
Consequently, the CI has been torpedoed. This means the bill will have to be resubmitted to parliament after which the 21 sitting days counting will start all over again.
Parliament is rising on Friday thus the house will either have to be recalled to make up the days or the commission will have to wait for MPs to return from their break to have the legal backing for the compilation of a new voters’ register.
