The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that a second batch of approximately 400 to 500 Ghanaian nationals is expected to be repatriated from South Africa next week following the successful evacuation of nearly 300 citizens yesterday.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Starr FM’s Midday News on Thursday, May 28, 2026, the Media Liaison Officer for the Foreign Ministry, Fred Duho, revealed that over 800 Ghanaians have voluntarily registered to return home so far.
According to Duho, Ghana’s mission in South Africa under the leadership of Ambassador, H.E. Benjamin Kofi Quashie, is actively processing the necessary paperwork for the next group of returnees.
“As we speak, about 400 people have already registered and are waiting to go through the normal formalities. They will be repatriated hopefully next week,” Duho stated.
The Ministry successfully supervised the arrival of close to 300 Ghanaians from the Southern African country. These were mostly Ghanaians living in South Africa without proper documentation.
According to Duho, due to a continuous surge in numbers of Ghanaians who have requested repatriation, officials now expect the upcoming group to be larger, likely requiring at least three separate evacuation phases in total.
“Registration is still ongoing. People are still adding to the numbers,” Duho added.
He further clarified that the evacuation exercise covers all willing Ghanaians, regardless of their legal immigration status in South Africa.
Duho emphasized that the sector Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is fully committed to ensuring the safe return of every compatriot.
“For us, any Ghanaian in South Africa who is asking to be repatriated home is our concern, whether you have papers or not. We are going to do everything within our power and mandate to bring you home, if you are willing to come home,” Duho stressed.
The Media Liaison Officer entreated Ghanaians remaining in South Africa, to abide by local laws and reflect on their conduct, noting that recent friction undermines continental unity.
“They should basically revisit their notes and change from their ways. Because the way they are going is really not in the interest of the United Africa we are all preaching,” he charged.
