Managers of faecal waste in Accra have sent an SOS message to residents to desist from dumping solid waste and other materials into places of convenience.
According to the handlers of faecal waste, the practice does not only increase their cost but threatens their operations.
Head of processing and engineering at the Sewage Systems Ghana Limited Eric Amofa Sarkodie revealed that about four aborted fetuses have been retrieved so far from faecal waste brought to the facility for processing
Speaking to Starr News during a visit to the facility by the parliamentary press corps, Mr Amofa Sarkodie disclosed the company spends over GHC20,000 monthly in separating solid waste and liquid waste that have been discharged at the facility due to the attitude of residents.
“Due to the amount of debris, the waste that people put into the system, we have to employ a lot of screening processes, about four stages to be able to get rid of the sand, the debris, the condoms, the pads, the wallets, the aborted babies and the rest.”
He went on “so, if you don’t have all those things in the system, that stage, most of them could have been eliminated and it could have also helped us to reduce our cost of operation, our electricity cost because we have a lot of systems online, motors, machines running so it will increase your electricity bill.”
Aside from the impact, these materials have on the outfit’s machines, Mr Sarkodie indicated that “we have to pay. we pay at least ghc20,00 every month to dispose of the debris that they put in the toilet. If you are spending 20,000 on the waste somebody has generated, it’s not fair.”
“So, if you will spill, you have to pay,” he added.
