The Ghana Immigration Service and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority have set up a joint investigation committee to investigate and promulgate ways to avoid border scuffles between the security agencies.
This follows a physical altercation between two officers at the Kulungugu Border Post in the Upper East Region.
The incident, which happened at Kulungugu on the 22nd of July 2024 involved two officers disagreeing over the payment of some border fees by an importer from Burkina Faso after the said importer refused to pay a 5 cedi “booking fee” demanded by personnel of the immigration officers.
A statement jointly signed by the GRA and the GIS, indicated that a series of meetings to discuss this unfortunate incident has taken place.
“Following these meetings, the two Heads have directed that a Joint Investigative Committee is set up, to look into the incident and come out with measures to forestall such occurrences in the future”, excerpts of the statement read.
In the statement, officers at the border post were also charged to liaise with the border security Committee to resolve issues that come up at the border while they wait for the outcome of the investigative committee
“The Officers in Charge of both Immigration and Customs at the Kulungugu Border Posts have also been directed to work under the auspices of the Border Security Committee (BOSEC) to resolve any immediate issues while awaiting the report of the Joint Investigative Committee”.
