The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) calls for the prosecution of an Electoral Commission (EC) officer accused of electoral misconduct.
The controversy surrounds Joseph Dery, an EC officer who allegedly issued ballot papers without the photo of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate, in Kintampo South.
The NPP has condemned the act, with Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Communications Director for Dr. Bawumia’s campaign, advocating for the officer’s prompt prosecution.
However, the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, has accused the NPP of using the incident to distract from their anticipated electoral defeat.
Gyamfi, addressing he media emphasised that the alleged misconduct is the responsibility of the EC, not the NDC.
He argued that the NPP should focus on ensuring transparency through lawful means, rather than spreading unfounded accusations against their opponents.
“The NPP has resorted to frivolous allegations because they can smell defeat coming, and so they have resorted to all manner of frivolous allegations just to incite their hooligans and their thugs to engage in violence and manipulate the electoral process.”
“This was not done by the NDC but by an Electoral Commission officer, and so if anybody ought to be blamed, it should be the EC and not the EC.” Mr Gyamfi called on the Ghanaian people to remain calm and focused, stating that the NDC remains committed to ensuring a peaceful, credible, and fair electoral process.
“We urge all Ghanaians to ignore the lies of the NPP and continue to exercise their civic duty by voting peacefully,” he added.
