The Interior Ministry has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Walewale and its surrounding communities following recent violent incidents in the area.
A statement issued by the Ministry of the Interior on Saturday, February 15, 2025, indicated that the curfew, which runs from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily, was imposed on consultation with the North East Regional Security Council.
The decision comes in response to violent disturbances, including the burning of commercial buses that ply through Walewale.
The government has called on Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, and the youth in the affected communities to remain calm and use peaceful means to address their grievances.
“The government urges all stakeholders to exercise restraint in the face of these challenges and to channel their energies into ensuring peace and stability in the region,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the government has placed a total ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, and any offensive weapons within Walewale and its environs.
Security agencies have been directed to arrest and prosecute any individuals found with weapons during the curfew period.
The imposition of the curfew is part of efforts to restore law and order in the area. Security forces are expected to intensify patrols and monitor the situation to prevent further escalation of violence.
The Ministry of the Interior has assured the public that it will continue to assess the situation and make necessary adjustments to maintain peace and security in the North East Region.
