Deputy Minister-Designate for Education and Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, has emphasized the critical role of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in Ghana’s industrial growth.
Speaking during his vetting before Parliament on Tuesday, February 25, he highlighted the need for sustained investment in STEM to prepare Ghanaian students for the fourth industrial revolution.
“STEM is the future. If we are to make progress as a nation and prepare our children to fully participate in the future, we must continue to invest in STEM and expand facilities to ensure every Ghanaian child benefits,” Dr. Apaak stated.
He acknowledged the efforts of the previous government in advancing STEM education and noted that Ghana currently has ten STEM schools at various stages of completion, with one fully operational.
However, he pointed out that STEM education is a capital-intensive initiative and cannot rely solely on government funding. He proposed mobilizing local resources and forming partnerships with donor organizations to support STEM development.
“I know, for example, that the MasterCard Foundation has played a significant role in supporting the government and the Ministry of Education. We must seek similar partnerships to promote and mainstream STEM education,” he added.
Dr. Apaak reaffirmed his commitment to building on existing STEM initiatives, stating that while the concept of STEM is not new, the introduction of dedicated STEM schools represents a significant step in enhancing Ghana’s education system.
His remarks underscored the government’s focus on STEM as a key driver of national development and industrial advancement.
