Three major road projects in the Greater Accra Region — the Ofankor-Nsawam highway, the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange, and the Kasoa-Winneba corridor remain incomplete, sparking growing concern among residents and daily commuters.
Once heralded as long-term solutions to persistent traffic congestion, these projects have now become symbols of delay and public frustration. With visible progress stalled for months, Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee recently undertook an inspection tour of the affected sites to assess the status of work.
The government has reiterated its commitment to completing key road infrastructure across the country, with renewed focus on routes critical to economic and social activity.
Chairman of the Roads and Transport Committee, Isaac Adjei Mensah, stated that work on the stalled projects would resume in phases and called for cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure a smooth execution process.
“All stalled projects were inspected today, including the Obetsebi Interchange, the Kasoa-Winneba Road, and the Ofankor-Nsawam stretch,” he said.
At the Obetsebi Interchange, work is 90% complete. Financial regularization is currently ongoing, and once finalized, the project will be brought to completion. The chairman added that all flood-prone areas around the interchange will be addressed as part of the final works.
On the Kasoa-Winneba Road, he explained that the project is divided into two phases. The stretch forms part of the international Abidjan-Lagos corridor, and initial oversight issues such as lack of parliamentary ratification and inadequate attention to safety and traffic management hampered progress.
Regarding the Ofankor-Nsawam Road, Mr. Adjei Mensah cited compensation as the main issue stalling work. He assured that the Ministry is ready to compensate affected residents and will collaborate with relevant stakeholders to resolve outstanding matters. Compensation, he stressed, would be administered fairly and in accordance with legal frameworks.
The Roads and Transport Committee pledged to maintain regular oversight to ensure transparency and accountability as government efforts to complete the projects intensify.
