Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has called for stronger regional cooperation in the fight against money laundering and terrorism financing (illicit financial flow).
Speaking at the 2nd Extraordinary Ministerial Meeting of the Intergovernmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) on Saturday, July 19, she emphasized the urgent need to deepen engagement across all ECOWAS member states; including those currently in political transition.
According to the Vice President, illicit financial flows and related crimes flourish where coordination is weak and institutions are fragmented, making it vital for West Africa to maintain a robust, inclusive, and forward-looking regional framework to combat these threats.
She highlighted the severe consequences of illicit financial flows and other criminal activities in regions with weak institutional security frameworks.

The Vice President reiterated , the need for a more inclusive approach to address these concerns.
“As leaders and stakeholders, our duty is to ensure that our regional architecture for combating financing of terrorism and money laundering, and weapons remains robust, inclusive, and forward-looking”. The Vice President said.
The newly appointed Chairman of the GIABA Ministerial Committee, Sheku F. Bangura, who also serves as Sierra Leone’s Minister of Finance and Budget, expressed his commitment to working with member states to combat financial crimes in the region.
