District Chief Executive (DCE) for Sawla-Tuna-Kalba, Saala Sinkina, has assured that peace has returned to the district after nearly two weeks of deadly clashes at Gbiniyiri over a land dispute.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Friday, September 5, Mr. Sinkina said the area has been calm for the past five days following swift interventions by government, security agencies, and the King of Gonjaland, Yagbonwura.

“Things are relatively calm for the past four, five days, we’ve not heard gunshots or killings in Sawla Tuna Kalba District. The intervention of the security agencies have brought relative calm over. Most of the villages are still being pollicised.

The delegation from the presidency to Yagbonwura also have yielded results. After the delegation, Yagbonwura also set delegation of prominent chiefs. They came and visited most of the communities and they have spoken to their youth groups to calm down,” the DCE said.

He added that communities that had been heavily affected by the clashes were still under close security watch to prevent any resurgence of violence.

Meanwhile, government figures confirm the scale of the displacement.

According to Interior Minister Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, at least 13,253 people have crossed into Côte d’Ivoire for safety, while more than 48,000 in total, mostly women and children, have been affected since the violence broke out on August 24.

Despite the loss of 31 lives, Mr. Sinkina expressed optimism that the collaborative efforts of traditional authorities, the presidency, and the National Peace Council will consolidate the relative calm and restore lasting peace in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District.
