An armed robber was shot dead when the Ghana Police Service has successfully thwarted a planned armed robbery operation along the Ejura–Nkruanza highway on Thursday, 9th April 2026.

The rest of the gang, including its leader, however absconded.

According to a statement from the Police, the police acting on credible intelligence moved into a bush near Mimenaso No. 2 where a six-member robbery gang had positioned itself to ambush and rob commuters.

“As the officers approached the hideout, the suspects mistook them for potential victims and opened fire. The police returned fire in self-defence, resulting in the death of one suspect. The remaining five, including the gang leader, Mahamadu Fuseini, also known as Shaini, fled the scene,” the statement fron the police read in part.

According to the police, a pump-action shotgun loaded with four live cartridges, two spent cartridges, and three assorted keypad mobile phones were recovered from the location.

“Two additional live cartridges were found in the pocket of the deceased suspect, along with a talisman tied around his waist,” the statement added.

The body of the deceased has been conveyed to the Atebubu Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy while the police have launched a manhunt for the remaining suspects and have appealed to the public for any information that could lead to their arrest.

The Ghana Police Service further assured residents and road users of continued vigilance and intensified patrols along major highways to curb criminal activities.
