Former Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Ibrahim Bashiru, has criticised the government’s handling of employment and economic promises, accusing it of failing to deliver on key commitments to young people, especially nurses.
Speaking in an interview with Lily Mohammed on GH Today on GHOne TV on Monday, April 13, 2026, Bashiru questioned claims that the economy is performing well.
He challenged government officials to engage directly with struggling students. “Go to the universities and tell the students today who cannot afford to pay their fees that the economy is good.”
Ibrahim Bashiru cited unfulfilled promises to nurses as a major concern. “Indeed, if the economy is good, when you were playing with the emotions of nurses and telling them that you were going to give them automatic posting, they are still sitting at home.” He claimed, adding that, “the so-called good economy, the people are still sitting at home, you’ve not employed them.”
According to him, similar promises made to teachers have also not been honoured. “When you were telling the teacher trainees that we are going to cancel the exams… today those people are still sitting at home, you have not employed them.”
He further criticised the government’s flagship job creation promises and accused the government of dismissing workers instead of creating jobs. “Instead, you came into government and dismissed people who were even employed… If indeed you wanted jobs, which has been your mantra, why did you dismiss the people?” He questioned.
The Former Deputy CEO of YEA questioned how the economy is being managed well if “the people sit in my village… and that promise of giving you automatic posting has not been fulfilled, if the woman at Makola is still suffering, if the farmer who has produced over 20 bags of rice cannot sell… then you look at the farmer and say, oh, for the economy we’ve managed it very well.”
Bashiru maintained that the gap between promises and delivery continues to affect public confidence, particularly among young people awaiting employment opportunities.
