The Member of Parliament for North Tongu and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work on sections of the Eastern Corridor Road, describing the project as transformational for multiple regions.

The Minister made the remarks after inspecting the Dorfor Adidome–Asikuma and Juapong–Asikuma stretches of the road, a significant portion of which passes through his constituency.

“We’ve been inspecting the Eastern Corridor Road project which goes through my constituency… I think about 80 percent of this project is in my constituency,” he said.

Mr. Ablakwa commended the government for its commitment to infrastructure development, while also praising the contractor for the quality of work.

“I must commend President Mahama for the commitment to transform our country… and the Roads Minister must also be commended for his diligence,” he stated.

He further lauded the Chinese construction firm handling the project. “This Chinese contractor is doing a great job… very professional… you can tell that they know what they’re about,” he added.

The Minister highlighted the technical considerations incorporated into the project, particularly measures to address flooding in the area.

“We are prone to flooding when the Akosombo Dam is opened or when we have high rainfall, so they’ve really elevated the road,” he explained.

He noted that multiple bridges are being constructed along the stretch to accommodate streams and waterways, including the Volta River.

Mr. Ablakwa emphasised that the road will serve as a key approach route for the planned Volivo Bridge across the Volta Lake, a major infrastructure project expected to commence soon.

“It is important to emphasise that this is the road that will be serving as the approaches for the… Volivo to Adidome Bridge,” he said, adding that progress on the road has paved the way for the bridge project to begin.

When completed, the Eastern Corridor Road is expected to enhance connectivity and drive economic growth across the Volta, Eastern, and Greater Accra Regions.

“I see the Volta Region and the Eastern Corridor really boosting agriculture, boosting trade, boosting tourism and really helping our economy to grow,” he stated.

The project, estimated at $90 million, is being financed through a loan facility from the African Development Bank and executed by a Chinese contractor.

According to the Minister, the interconnected nature of the road network means its benefits will extend beyond the Volta Region to adjoining areas, positioning it as a major national infrastructure investment.
