The People’s Alliance for Governance and Accountability (PAGA) is demanding that parliamentary hearings into the AKSA bribery allegations be televised live, arguing that Ghanaians who suffered through the DUMSOR era have a right to watch the inquiry unfold in real time.
The demand forms part of a broader press statement calling on the Speaker of Parliament to establish a bipartisan Ad Hoc Committee to investigate the approval and ratification of the AKSA Emergency Power Agreement, including allegations that Members of Parliament received payments or other benefits.
“The proceedings should be televised live. Ghanaians who endured the devastating effects of DUMSOR deserve to see what those entrusted with public power did at the time,” the statement said.
PAGA’s call follows evidence accepted in a United States criminal prosecution that money was paid to some Members of Ghana’s Parliament in connection with the power transaction, which Parliament was constitutionally required to scrutinize and approve.
According to the group, the inquiry must determine whether the integrity of Parliament’s ratification process was compromised, and must summon all relevant persons and institutions.
PAGA maintained that transparency is central to restoring public confidence.
“We are not asking the Government to convict anyone outside a court of law. We are asking for an investigation into the matter and further prosecution. We are asking for transparency. We are asking for accountability,” the statement concluded.
