New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has held a productive meeting with the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Hiroshi Yoshimoto, and his team, including representatives of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
In a statement issued after the discussions, Dr Bawumia said the talks centred on strengthening bilateral relations between Ghana and Japan and expanding cooperation in several priority areas.
“Our discussions focused on strengthening our bilateral ties and deepening cooperation in key areas, including digitalisation, fintech, artificial intelligence, flood control and methods to combat galamsey,” he stated.
Dr Bawumia expressed appreciation to Ambassador Yoshimoto and his delegation for the courtesy visit, describing the engagement as productive.
The meeting comes amid ongoing efforts by successive Ghanaian governments to leverage international partnerships in technology-driven development and environmental challenges, particularly the fight against illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) and climate-related flooding.
Japan has historically supported Ghana through JICA in infrastructure, capacity building and technical assistance.
The latest discussions signal continued interest in applying Japanese expertise to emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence and financial technology, alongside traditional development priorities.
