The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) is set to launch a series of activities to mark its 70th anniversary, with management promising programmes focused on health promotion, staff recognition, fundraising and the hospital’s future development.

The Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Dr. (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, announced the planned activities on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the hospital’s 2026 Mid-Year Performance Review Conference in Kumasi.

The anniversary will be celebrated under the theme, “70 Years of Impacting Lives: Celebrating the Past and Repositioning for the Future.”

According to Dr. Baidoo, the celebrations would include a healthy cooking competition, health screenings, blood donation drives and inter-directorate games.

Other activities would include a public lecture and medical fair, staff awards, commissioning of the Cardiac Interventional Centre, fundraising and a dinner dance.

The hospital will also name some facilities in honour of prominent partners and staff who have contributed to its development.

Dr. Baidoo said the anniversary provided an opportunity not only to celebrate the hospital’s achievements but also to chart a clear path for the coming decades of excellence in tertiary healthcare, education and research.

He called for the active participation of stakeholders as the hospital marked the milestone.

New specialist facilities

The anniversary celebrations come at a time when KATH is undertaking several infrastructure and service expansion projects.

Among these is the multi-million-dollar Cardiac Interventional Centre being developed under the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as MahamaCares.

The centre is expected to expand access to advanced cardiovascular interventions and reduce the need for emergency transfers to Accra and overseas facilities.
The hospital has also completed refurbishment of its Main Dialysis Centre, which has been operationalised to expand access to specialist dialysis services.

In addition, work on KATH’s Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Centre has been completed, paving the way for its operationalisation.

Dr. Baidoo said the development would make KATH the first public health facility in Ghana to have a state-of-the-art specialist fertility centre.

Strengthening regional healthcare

KATH is also strengthening its collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service to provide sustained clinical mentorship and capacity-building programmes for peripheral health facilities.

The initiative is intended to improve clinical care and the quality of referrals from peripheral hospitals in the Ashanti Region and beyond, particularly in maternal healthcare.

As the hospital enters the second half of 2026, Dr. Baidoo said management’s priorities were to consolidate areas of strong performance, urgently address identified gaps and use the 70th anniversary as an opportunity to renew the institution’s commitment to the people it serves.
