Ayariga Proposes
Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister, Mahama Ayariga, has proposed police escorts for Ayalolo buses during peak hours to ease commuting challenges for stranded passengers.
Speaking during a visit to the Ayalolo Terminal at Achimota, the minister said the arrangement would make travel faster and more reliable at busy times.
He disclosed plans to engage the Interior Minister to work out modalities that would also allow the buses to use less congested lanes in the opposite direction of traffic.
Ayariga described current traffic patterns on dual carriage ways as awkward, noting that while one side is heavily congested, the opposite side often remains relatively empty.
“These traffic rules are awkward. When you are struggling on the right side, the left side is usually empty. That’s the situation. And then, at peak hours, when you are struggling on the left-side road, the right side is empty, even though you have a three-lane road or a dual carriageway—the four-lane road.
“So we want to sit with the interior minister and then the IGP and their team and see if it is possible that, at peak hours from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. in the mornings, one of the lanes on the dedicated and on the opposite side can be dedicated…so that they will move fast,” he said.
The proposal aims to dedicate one lane on the opposite side during the morning rush to enable Ayalolo buses to bypass heavy congestion and improve service reliability for passengers.
This, he said, is to allow free free flow of traffic and also help with movement of passengers at peak times.
