Minister for communications and digitalization Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has directed owners of blocked or deactivated 11 million unregistered SIM Cards without Ghana card to head to the offices of the NCA to be exempted.
Some affected subscribers have been left stranded since they are unable to pay the 280 cedis fees to acquire Ghana card as the NIA no longer offers regular services which is free.
Addressing Parliament, the Communications Minister asked those affected including some MPs and the Speaker of Parliament to either initiate processes towards registration of their SIM cards or apply for exemption.
Former Minority Leader and Tamale South MP, Haruna Iddrisu accused the Minister of breaking marriages and relationships with the directive to Telcos to block SIMs.
Addressing the media after her presentation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful stated there’s no turning back on the decision to eliminate unregistered SIM cards.
She, however, expressed concern over loss of revenue to the Telcos revealing there have been appeals for her to reconsider her decision.
The Ablekuma West MP rather called on the affected to utilize the available windows to reactivate their SIM cards.
Ningo-Mprampram MP and Deputy Ranking member for the Communications Committee, Sam George and his ranking member ABA Fuseini however asked the Minister to reconsider her directive given the inability of the NIA to provide subscribers with Ghana card.
