The Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has condemned the destruction of the Bawku Naba Statue but assured residents that the government will rebuild it.
He described the incident which led to that as “regrettable and unacceptable.”
In a Facebook post on Thursday, July 17, the Minister condemned the destruction of the monument, which holds deep traditional and cultural significance for the people of Bawku.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to restoring the statue and ensuring that appropriate sanctions are applied to those responsible.
Dr. Boamah’s comments came following an All Ranks durbar held at Burma Camp with officers, soldiers, and Defence Civilian Staff of Garrisons 1 and 5.
During the open forum, the Minister commended the troops for their professionalism and bravery but cautioned against indiscipline within the ranks.
He also condemned the recent shooting of two soldiers in Bawku and called on the military high command to address the growing concern of personnel offering unauthorized guard services to private individuals.
“I condemned the destruction of the cherished statue in Bawku over the weekend and assured that the government shall rebuild the statue and expects appropriate sanctions to be meted out to the perpetrators. I further decried the shooting of the two soldiers in Bawku,” he stated.
Meanwhile, tensions remain high in Bawku following the incident, which reportedly left six civilians dead, injured dozens, and led to the destruction of properties worth millions of cedis.
Some legislators have accused the military of acting with ethnic bias, alleging that soldiers targeted innocent Kusasi residents and looted shops under the guise of responding to an attack on a military-escorted convoy.
