Current DStv rates may change after December review – MultiChoice Ghana

MultiChoice Ghana says the DStv upgrade offer ends in December 2025, with a review to decide whether current subscription rates will remain or change.

Head of Corporate Affairs at MultiChoice Ghana, Nii Armah Dagadu, has confirmed that the landmark DStv upgrade offer announced for Ghanaian subscribers will run until December 2025, after which a committee will review its performance and determine the way forward.

Mr. Dagadu made the disclosure in an interview with Lily Mohammed on GHTODAY on GHOne TV on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, following government’s announcement of a new partnership with MultiChoice Africa.

The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations revealed on Monday that it had secured an agreement with MultiChoice Africa that will see DStv subscribers in Ghana enjoy up to 50 percent more value on their packages beginning October 1, 2025.

The development follows the conclusion of deliberations by a Stakeholder Committee comprising the Ministry, the National Communications Authority (NCA), MultiChoice Africa and MultiChoice Ghana. The committee was tasked to review DStv pricing structures in Ghana and to propose measures to curb cross-border piracy of decoders from Nigeria.

Under the new model, subscribers will pay their existing fees but enjoy access to higher-tier content. For instance, Access customers paying GHS 99 will now receive Family bouquet channels worth GHS 190.

Depending on the bouquet chosen, subscribers will benefit from between 33 percent and 50 percent more value.

MultiChoice Africa has also announced a GHS 555 subsidy on the Zapper decoder and dish kit, effectively reducing the acquisition cost by 50 percent for new customers.

Beyond pricing, the Stakeholder Committee also considered the issue of cross-border piracy, which has seen decoders from Nigeria illegally sold and used in Ghana.

To address this, a Working Group comprising the Ministry, the NCA, the Cyber Security Authority, the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Ghana Police Service and other agencies will be established to design and implement measures to combat the practice. Officials say the piracy has denied the state tax revenue and deprived customers of proper after-sales service.

Speaking on the new model, Mr. Dagadu explained that the decision represents a “win-win” outcome for both consumers and the company.

“It’s essentially an upgrade offer for every customer. The outcome of this whole interaction has been a win-win for everyone. What we’re doing is we’re giving all customers an opportunity to make huge savings between 30 to about 50 percent. And I must say that the biggest winners in all of this are Compact subscribers, who now get up to a 50 percent discount on their current offer,” he said.

According to him, the focus on Compact subscribers is because of football’s influence in Ghana.

“This is also because the biggest driver in Ghana is football. And for that reason, Compact is the home of the Premier League. That’s why the biggest savings are there,” he explained.

He clarified that the arrangement should not be seen as a price reduction, but rather an upgrade offer.

“What we are offering customers is more value, more value for less. Okay, but not necessarily a price reduction. It is an upgrade offer. An upgrade offer that is valid between now and the end of December,” Mr. Dagadu stressed.

He added that the committee would reassess the arrangement in December.

“At December, we will review it again, like the Minister said. The committee will still be seated to review the offer. So depending on how the offer performs, there will be a review and it could continue or could even become better,” he said.

Mr. Dagadu assured customers that there are no hidden charges under the new arrangement.

“There will be no surprise fees. There’s absolutely no hidden cost. What you pay for, what’s happening is we’re saying pay GHS 99 for Access and let’s give you Family, which is valued at GHS 190. It’s still for the same 30-day cycle. Nothing changes. The only thing that changes is your viewing experience gets better. You pay the same, but you see more,” he emphasized.

He further explained how the offer will help football fans who would otherwise have had to upgrade in order to watch certain matches.

“Ordinarily, because of the Champions League action tonight and tomorrow, what would have happened was some customer would want to upgrade to Compact Plus if he wants to watch the Champions League.

But now, if he’s on Compact, continue paying your GHS 380 and we’ll give you the Champions League. If you’re on Compact Plus, you still pay GHS 570 and we’ll give you Premium. If you’re on Premium and you still want Premium, pay for Premium, but we’ll enter you into the promo that will give you the opportunity to go and watch future Premier League games live in that area,” Mr. Dagadu explained.

He concluded by noting that the arrangement offers savings and enhanced value for every subscriber tier.

“So what we are receiving from tomorrow is a savings offer and an opportunity to see more, to get more. Compact sits in the middle of all of this. What we are offering customers is more value for less,” he said.
