The Audit Service Ghana has apologised and clarified that the GH¢427,995,661.40 figure contained in its nationwide payroll audit report does not relate to any individual public servant, but was the result of a transpositional error.
This follows a report by The Fourth Estate which linked the figure to alleged unearned salary payments involving a public official.
In a statement dated April 21, 2026, the Audit Service explained that the amount was wrongly attributed in the published report.
“We offer our most sincere and unreserved apologies to Mr Frank Oliver Kpodo for the distress and unwarranted public scrutiny this error may have caused,” the statement said.
It further clarified the correct context of the figure.
“We wish to state that, the amount attributed to Mr Kpodo above was due to a transpositional error. The GHC427,995,661.40 relates to the Ministry of Education in respect of 3,476 unaccounted staff during the payroll audit,” it added.
The Audit Service also extended apologies to state institutions affected by the error, including the Government of Ghana and the Controller and Accountant-General.
