The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has disclosed that the government will soon procure 90 new electric buses as part of a broader plan to modernize the country’s public transport system and reduce its environmental footprint.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra, the Minister said the initiative is a key component of the “Resetting Ghana Agenda” for the transport sector.
According to him, the transition to electric buses will not only lower operating costs for transport operators but also help reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality in urban areas.
“The government is procuring 90 electric buses for deployment in our major cities. This is an important step in our effort to transform public transport into a safer, cleaner, and more efficient system,” Mr. Nikpe stated.
He explained that the Ministry of Transport is working closely with the Ministry of Energy to set up charging infrastructure across the country.
These charging points, he said, will be installed at bus terminals and along high-traffic routes to support the smooth operation of the new fleet.
In addition to the electric buses, the Minister revealed that the government is pursuing a comprehensive fleet renewal programme for both the State Transport Company (STC) and Metro Mass Transit.
This, he noted, is expected to improve reliability, cut down breakdowns, and offer commuters better comfort at affordable prices.
“The introduction of electric buses, along with the renewal of existing fleets, represents a decisive shift toward sustainable mobility in Ghana. We are not only investing in vehicles but also in the infrastructure and systems needed to make them work effectively,” he added.
Mr. Nikpe emphasized that the shift to electric public transport will also create new opportunities for local businesses and jobs in the areas of maintenance, charging services, and energy supply.
He assured stakeholders that the government will continue to engage private investors and international partners to expand the initiative in the coming years.
