“I don’t need your trust, you’re just arrogant” — Appiah-Kubi slams Gary Nimako

Andy Appiah-Kubi, lead counsel for embattled NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has brushed off criticisms from the party’s Director of Legal Affairs, Gary Nimako, describing his decision to block him as sheer arrogance.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Friday, July 4, Mr. Appiah-Kubi said he owes Mr. Nimako no explanation and has no need for his trust.

“Who is he in my life that I need his trust? And if he blocks me, he’s being arrogant. To say the least, he is my junior at practice. And he is my junior in age. And indeed, well, we all went to the University of Ghana, our records are there. I was an SRC president.”

“Notwithstanding that I had enviable academic records. Why are these words flying in my direction? Before then, he was not somebody I was speaking to all the time or many times. He was an occasional friend that we met. We shared a few things and again, in the party, sometimes in the past, even before he became an appointee of the party,” he said.

Appiah-Kubi’s comments follow Mr. Nimako’s revelation that he has blocked the lawyer’s number, accusing him of betrayal over the handling of Chairman Wontumi’s legal troubles.

Mr. Nimako earlier expressed disappointment in Appiah-Kubi for publicly claiming he was unaware of a court application Nimako filed to vary Wontumi’s bail conditions—an application Nimako insists was discussed with Appiah-Kubi beforehand.

Chairman Wontumi has been under investigation by EOCO for alleged financial crimes, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. He was arrested on May 27, 2025, and granted GH₵50 million bail with two justified sureties the next day. However, meeting the stringent bail conditions delayed his release.

In an effort to ease the process, Mr. Nimako filed an application on May 30 to seek a variation of the bail terms but later withdrew the application on June 2, a day before the scheduled hearing.

Amidst these developments, Mr. Appiah-Kubi dismissed suggestions that there was poor coordination within Wontumi’s legal team, insisting that his approach was guided strictly by professional standards, not party politics.

Chairman Wontumi was later released after eventually satisfying the bail conditions. Meanwhile, investigations by EOCO are still ongoing.
