NPP’s Amfo Sefa threatens violence ahead of Akwatia by-election

NPP's Dennis Amfo Sefa threatens violence ahead of Akwatia by-election

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Amfo Sefa, has ignited serious concern after urging party supporters to “arm themselves” ahead of a potential parliamentary by-election in Akwatia following the demise of the MP, Ernest Kumi.

He warned of a violent confrontation if similar events seen in Ablekuma North are repeated.

In a provocative statement widely circulated online, Amfo Sefa declared, “We will prepare ourselves, arm ourselves and get ready for Akwatia. “We’re telling our men, we’re telling our boys, arm yourselves and get ready and prepare for Akwatia. We will meet them in Akwatia if they repeat the same thing they repeated in Ablekuma.”

His remarks follow the chaotic rerun of the parliamentary election in Ablekuma North, which was marred by violence, allegations of vote manipulation, and reported attacks on journalists and party agents.

The statement has sparked outrage and concern among civil society groups and political analysts, who warn that such rhetoric could incite violence and threaten national stability.

The Electoral Commission has yet to comment publicly, but security agencies are reportedly monitoring the situation closely.

Amfo Sefa’s comments come as political tensions rise over disputed parliamentary seats.

In Ablekuma North, former NPP MP Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie defied party orders and ran as an independent in the rerun, highlighting internal divisions within the NPP.

Observers are calling on all political actors to exercise restraint and prioritize peace as Ghana navigates a delicate post-election environment.
