Race to the future: The Dubai Expo story

The sky has never been the limit for Dubai.

The Emirate defies the sky each day with the urge to break records. From the world’s tallest building – the Burj Khalifa, to gold dispensing ATMs and putting up a luxurious living environment on a desert, nothing is left to chance at the world’s most popular tourist destination.

By fortunate stroke of serendipity and a dint of hard work, it was only right that the world’s biggest fair; The Expo, be held in Dubai, especially when various economies around the globe needed inspiration for the future, which Dubai is setting trends in.

The 2020 Expo held in Dubai from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022 is the biggest Expo the world has ever seen with almost every country in the world participating. The theme of the Expo- ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’- sets the tone to how exhilarating the future of the world will look.

The host country, United Arab Emirates has successfully put itself on the map for its notably groundbreaking infrastructure – with a beautiful skyline and beach front. It is also a hub for the world’s luxury brands and countless networking opportunities. The Expo takes place on a vast 1,083 acres of land between the emirate of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, where various pavilions, parks, theaters, gardens and even a five-star hotel were situated. Here are some notable exhibitions from the Expo.

The Future of Flying

With calls by world leaders and environmentalists for zero carbon, and the Paris Agreement’s expectation of drastic reduction of carbon usage, some of the world’s leading airlines are making conscious efforts to achieve this goal. Being the world’s leading airline, Emirates is poised to ensure emission of Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases by their aircrafts become a thing of the past.

Emirates’ pavilion at the Expo showcases how flying will care for not only the passenger, but the environment as well. At the pavilion, each visitor is given a digitized ball called ‘seed’ rather than orthodox passes which are often required in order to enjoy their exhibition.

Emirates plans to revolutionize commercial aviation with the introduction of aircrafts made from durable yet environmentally friendly materials, self-healing functions- capable of self-repair during flights and shorter flying times. It is also considering powering these aircrafts with eco-friendly matter like water and solar power.

But the highlight of the Emirates pavilion is the chance to experience simulations of how these innovations will manifest in the near future.

The Future and The Past in Harmony

The Canada Pavilion, structured like a circumference of wood, tells a story of Canada’s vast forest lands, which is still maintained despite a healthy growing urban area. The exhibition showcases the past undeveloped lands in harmony with the present urbanisation representing a future worth investing in. The country is home to the world’s largest number of natural lakes. Canada has a vast land mass, as the world’s second largest country, however the country is sparsely populated. The Canadian exhibition in a 360° video, invites people from all walks of life to visit, emigrate to, study, work or live in Canada.

A Land of Limitless Opportunities

Ghana’s exhibition at the Expo outdoors the country’s openness to investments. The pavilion is clad in Ghana’s kente cloth – a woven fabric from the Ashanti Region and known for its intricate pattern which appeals to royalty. The exhibition features areas ready for investors such as agriculture as the country boasts of fertile soil, trade, tourism, food among others. The exhibition also has Ghanaian products ranging from confectionery, spice to arts and crafts on sale.

Breaking Records

While Dubai has carved a niche for itself in record breaking, the 2020 Expo dared to push the limits of human reasoning. This Expo holds the record for the largest Expo ever held with highest participation. It also holds the record of housing the world’s biggest passenger lift which takes up to 160 people at a go and the world’s biggest 360-degree projection theatre.

The Expo will end on the 31st of March, 2022. The next World Expo will be held in Osaka, Japan in 2025.

It’s Not Over Till Shots Are Called

In the spirit of pushing the limits with the least opportunity, a number of pavilions will be maintained to form a new neighborhood in Dubai; District 2020. Named after the Expo, the district will accommodate a hospital, schools, and research centers for children as well as residences. District 2020 will be ‘human-centric’ city, structured for easy living and working. Expo 2020 will end in March 2020, but posterity will also have the experience.
