Former President John Dramani Mahama has announced that an NDC government under his leadership will split the existing Sissala East District in the Upper West Region into two, creating a new district. This promise was made in response to an appeal from the chiefs and people of Nabullo, who have long called for a separate Sissala South District to address issues of decentralization and to close the development gap in the area.
Speaking during a mini-rally as part of his campaign tour of the Upper West Region, Mahama, the NDC’s 2024 presidential candidate, assured traditional leaders that their request would be given priority. He urged them to submit a formal petition during the government’s upcoming rededication exercise, to ensure the establishment of the Sissala South District if he is elected.
“I know that the district is a very big district and the Sisala South area is quite remote from the district capital Atumu,” Mahama said. He emphasized the need for re-demarcation based on population growth and indicated that his next administration would initiate the process after the 2024 elections.
Mahama encouraged local chiefs to channel their petition through the Ministry of Local Government, stating, “We can re-demarcate and create the Sissala South District so that we can bring development closer to your doorsteps.”
The pledge is seen as a key campaign promise aimed at improving governance and local development in remote parts of the Upper West Region. The chiefs and people of the Sissala South area have long advocated for the division, citing challenges in accessing services from the distant district capital.
