Ghana has officially begun its transition to chip-embedded passports, marking a major technological upgrade to the country’s travel documentation system. As of Monday, April 28, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, spearheaded by the Minister, Hon Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced that the old biometric passports will no longer be issued, making way for a new generation of enhanced security travel documents.
Old Passports Still Valid Until 2030
In line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) guidelines, the current biometric passports will remain valid until 2030. However, citizens are encouraged to switch to the new chip-embedded passports at their convenience, regardless of whether their current passports have expired.
No Extra Fees, Faster Processing
Applicants will not be required to pay any additional fees for delivery. The standard application processing period is 15 working days, provided all required documents are submitted. Those in urgent need can opt for expedited service, which ensures delivery within five working days.
Cabinet has further announced a reduction in the application fee for ordinary chip-embedded passports from GHS500 to GHS350, pending parliamentary approval of the new Fees and Charges Act in the coming weeks.
24-Hour Passport Services Begin
To support the expected surge in applications, the Passport Application Headquarters in Accra will commence 24-hour operations starting today. Applicants can visit www.passport.mfa.gov.gh to apply online and track the entire process—from submission to delivery.
In an effort to make passport delivery more accessible, applicants who face address-related challenges can opt to pick up their passports at their nearest Ghana Post location. Ghana Post, which has a nationwide footprint, has been named the lead courier partner for the delivery of the new passports.
Passport Safety & Handling Guidelines
The new passports feature a biographical data page made from a durable polymer substrate, designed to resist wear but also requiring careful handling. Citizens are advised to:
- Avoid bending the passport or keeping it in back pockets.
- Keep it away from heat and liquids to prevent damage.
- Do not store it with other chip-based cards, as this may interfere with the RFID chip embedded within.
- Do not attempt to split the data page, which would permanently destroy the passport.
- In case of accidental damage, report to the issuing authority, do not attempt repairs.
Diaspora Not Left Behind
Ghanaian citizens abroad will not be left out of the reforms. The Ministry assures that Embassies and High Commissions around the world are fully equipped to assist with the issuance of the new chip-embedded passports.
This reform is part of a broader national strategy to modernise identification systems, improve border security, and streamline international travel for Ghanaians.
