The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has partnered with the Vanguard Life Assurance Company Limited to outdoor a new welfare package to members.
The product, which was launched at the High Court in Tamale, was dubbed ‘JUSAG Funeral Booster Plan’, and intends to provide financial support to Judicial Service workers in the event of bereavement.
The unveiling of the package saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between JUSAG represented by Mr. Samuel Afotey Otu, the National President witnessed by Mr. Abdulai Yakubu, the General Secretary of one part, and Vanguard Life Assurance represented by Mr. Emmanuel Nintuarah, Head of Distribution and witnessed by Mr. Yussif Adam, Head of Special Market at Vanguard Life Assurance of the other part.
Explaining the policy to members, the General Secretary, Mr. Abdulai Yakubu stated that the policy which is part of initiatives to celebrate the JUSAG 50-year anniversary provides free insurance cover for members to the tune of Ghs 5,000.00 to cover the member, spouse, and two children, and two parents.
He added that “the booster package has a premium of GHc5.00 with an additional total benefit up to GHc10,800.00 covering members, spouses, two children, and two parents. With the highest premium of Ghs 35.00, the total benefit cover is Ghs 72,000.00 spread to cover the funeral on the death of a member, spouse, two children, and two parents.”

Addressing members at the program, the National President of JUSAG, Mr. Samuel Afotey Otu underscored the benefits of the policy as part of measures of JUSAG to ensure that members have better alternative sources of financial support for their funerals instead of resorting to banks and other lending institutions when they lose their loved ones.
Mr. Afotey assured members that the leadership interest is to ensure better welfare for all, adding that the funeral booster policy is an addition to JUSAG 3600 welfare policies which include JUSCOFund, JUSAG Heritage Cashback, Judicial Service Provident Fund (Tier 3 Pension Scheme), End of Membership Benefit, among others.
“Today, we are also here to launch our funeral booster or bereavement packages in partnership with Vanguard Assurance. We will also provide you with detailed information about the Judicial Service Occupational Pensions Scheme (Tier 2) about performance of the fund and guidelines for members, updates on the draft Judicial Service Regulation (CI), and take feedback from you to make progress. These are all part of the 50th anniversary celebration programmes,” he stated.
Admonish
The National President of JUSAG, Samuel Afotey Otu, also called for a united front and cooperation from members as his leadership is working hard to secure a better working condition for them with the full commitment and support of the Chief Justice and the Judicial Secretary who are equally passionate about the welfare of the staff.
The National President further admonished the staff about the need to adhere to the code of ethics of the service.
He mentioned some of the disciplinary actions taken against staff that went contrary to the code of ethics.
“Before I resume my seat, let me remind everyone gathered here today that, much as a majority of us uphold high ethical standards in our line of work, there are frequent reports and petitions received concerning indiscipline and misconduct of some staff.
“Notably amongst them are embezzlement, extortion, suppression of revenue and deposits, teeming and lading,” Mr. Afotey Otu stated.
“These negative practices affect the image of the service both locally and internationally, and it’s time we sat up to reverse the trend,” he added.
Enhance benefits
The Northern Regional Administrative Officer Nana Antwi Boasiako, who acted as the chairman of the program, praised the leadership of JUSAG for their good work.
He referred to the President as their “saviour” because he is working tirelessly for the betterment of staff welfare without fear or favour.
Northern Sector Area Manager of National Insurance Commission, Joseph Akanlagm, commended JUSAG for selecting the northern region for the national launch emphasizing JUSAG’s partnership with Vanguard to share risk was remarkable.
He admonished both parties to adhere to the terms of the contract for the benefit of members and respective organizations.
Head of Special Market at Vanguard Life Assurance Company Limited, Mr. Yussif Adam said their partnership with JUSAG is to enhance the existing benefits of members’ welfare when it comes to funerals.
The launch was graced by some executives of JUSAG, which includes Bro. Yakubu Abdulai,- General Secretary, Bro. Owusu Kankam- National Treasurer, Sister Joyce Asan – Deputy General Secretary, Sister Hannah Boachie – National Women Commissioner and the host Regional Chair for JUSAG – Tamale, Miss Justina Abassitimi.
Also, the program was attended by the Regional Administrative Officer for North East Region – Mrs. Lydia Asampana, and representatives of all courts and units in the Northern, Northeast, and Savanna regions.
