Professor Alidu Seidu Mahama, a lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, has won the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Tamale Central Constituency with a commanding victory.

Prof. Seidu polled 840 votes out of 1,500 valid ballots cast to secure the party’s ticket ahead of the 2025 parliamentary elections. His closest contender, former Tamale Metropolitan Assembly Mayor, Abdul Hanan Gundadoo, garnered 536 votes, while the remaining 10 aspirants shared the rest of the votes.

The full certified results declared by the Director of Elections and IT, Dr. Arnold Mashud Abukari, are as follows:

  1. Prof. Alidu Seidu – 840
  2. Abdul Hanan Gundadoo – 536
  3. Dr. Seidu Fiter – 44
  4. Alhassan Mbalba – 10
  5. Lawyer Sadat Haruna Fuseini – 9
  6. Dr. Abdul-Rashid Abdul-Rahaman – 9
  7. Alhassan Osman Gomda – 7
  8. Shamima Yakubu – 5
  9. Mariama Naama Salifu – 5
  10. Prof. Abdul-Razak Abubakari – 5
  11. Hajia Mulaika Salisu – 3
  12. Aliu Abdul-Hamid – 23

Total valid votes: 1,500
Rejected ballots: 1

The Tamale Central parliamentary primaries were held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale. The polls ran from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with over 1,500 delegates casting their ballots under tight security.

The by-election was triggered by the tragic death of MP Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed in a military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025. The NDC opened nominations from August 22 to August 24, with nomination forms priced at GH₵5,000 and filing fees set at GH₵40,000, though women and persons with disabilities enjoyed a 50% concession.

A total of 12 aspirants entered the race, ranging from academics and technocrats to former local government officials and grassroots mobilizers. Notable among them were Prof. Alidu Seidu, Prof. Abdul-Razak Abubakari, Abdul Hanan Gundadoo (former MCE), and Mariama Naama Salifu.

Historically, Tamale Central has been a safe seat for the NDC since its creation in 2004, producing MPs like Inusah Fuseini and Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. The primaries are often highly competitive due to the prestige attached to representing the NDC in the constituency.
