The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has conferred an Honorary Doctorate on Professor Joshua Alabi in recognition of his decades-long service, leadership and transformational contributions to the institution.
The ceremony, held at the UPSA campus on Thursday, December 4, 2025, brought together the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, members of the University Council, faculty, staff, students and invited guests.
In his acceptance speech, Prof. Alabi expressed profound gratitude, describing the honour as a deeply meaningful moment in his long association with the institution. He noted that receiving the recognition from a university where he had been a student, lecturer, rector and the first Vice-Chancellor made the award especially significant.
He recounted his journey with the then Institute of Professional Studies (IPS), which began in 1976, reflecting on the challenges of limited resources, a year-long closure in 1978 and the resilience that shaped both students and the institution. “This recognition is not merely an award; it symbolizes a collective story of faith, resilience and transformation,” he said.
Prof. Alabi highlighted his years of service in various academic and administrative roles at IPS and UPSA, including Assistant Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Head of Marketing, Dean of Management, Pro-Rector, Rector and later Vice-Chancellor. He said each role represented a responsibility to nurture people, ideas and progress.
He also acknowledged the collective effort of staff, students and alumni in the institution’s growth over the years, noting that UPSA’s progress was achieved through teamwork, shared vision and commitment.
Prof. Alabi used the occasion to express appreciation to successive administrations and the current leadership of UPSA for recognising past contributions and strengthening continuity. He described leadership as stewardship rather than ownership and encouraged the youth to embrace hard work, integrity and determination.
He concluded his remarks with gratitude to God, his family, colleagues and the wider university community for their support throughout his journey, adding that the true measure of success lies in the legacy left behind.
