The Electoral Commission has suspended all arrangements for the re-run of the Kpandai Constituency parliamentary election following a Supreme Court ruling.
The suspension comes as the Court heard a Certiorari application filed by Kpandai MP Mathew Nyindam challenging the Tamale High Court’s annulment of the December 7, 2024, election results.
The Tamale High Court had previously ruled in favor of NDC candidate Daniel Nsala Wakpal, nullifying Nyindam’s victory. Nyindam argued that the High Court lacked jurisdiction over the petition and sought a judicial review to quash the annulment and all related proceedings.
Following the High Court ruling, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) secured a stay of execution to prevent the Electoral Commission and the NDC from acting on the annulment.
The NPP has stated it will await further legal outcomes before determining its next steps and has pledged to act decisively depending on the Supreme Court’s guidance.
The Kpandai seat has recently been at the center of political controversy. Minority Members of Parliament protested the Clerk’s formal communication of the High Court ruling to the Electoral Commission, arguing that parliamentary processes had not been fully exhausted.
At one point, they staged a walkout and dressed in black to express their opposition to what they described as a rushed and unlawful declaration of vacancy.
