Gov’t targets ban on poultry imports to protect local industry – Agric Minister

Government is targeting a ban on importation of poultry products to protect the local poultry industry

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture has set a target of 2028 to potentially ban the importation of poultry products, contingent upon the nation achieving internal production security.

This ambitious goal is based on government’s flagship “Nkoko Nkete Nkete” program, designed to phase out reliance on foreign meat and revitalisation of the domestic agricultural sector.

Speaking on GHOne TV’s GH Today on Monday, January 26, 2026, the Sector Minister, Eric Opoku, clarified that the proposed ban is not an absolute certainty but depends heavily on the scale of local production.

”If we are able to produce 60% of our consumption today, you cannot place the ban; you can regulate,” the Minister explained. He noted that while regulation is necessary to ensure the population is fed, the government has a primary “responsibility to protect local producers” from price collapses caused by excessive imports.

Mr Opoku emphasized that achieving food sufficiency is not a task for the government alone as the0 ministry’s 2028 projection relies on a synergy between government interventions and the active participation of the private sector, particularly large-scale poultry producers.

”When you put together the effort of the government and that of the private sector, which is always bigger, certainly you will get to your target,” Opoku stated.

In a passionate appeal to the public, the Minister urged Ghanaians to patronize local poultry products as a means of combating unemployment which is the country’s major challenge.

”Let’s all buy from local sources so that our local producers will have the financial capability to expand… and eventually the economy booms,” the Minister charged.
