Lawyer Kwame Jantuah has expressed his concerns about the impact of COVID and betting taxes on the Ghanaian public, emphasizing that while these taxes put pressure on citizens, they should have been managed more effectively.
Speaking on GHOne TV with Lantam Papanko, the lawyer argued that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) should have acknowledged the burden these taxes place on the people and sought ways to ease the pressure.
“I believe COVID and betting taxes, as much as they put pressure on Ghanaians, should have been channeled properly. I expected the NDC to say, ‘We see the pressure these two taxes put on the Ghanaian. However, let’s see how we can manage it,'” he said.
Lawyer Jantuah also raised concerns about the negative impact of betting on the youth, describing it as a growing source of immorality. He pointed out that while betting is not a profession, it has become a dangerous habit for many, with some individuals placing their salaries on gambling. He emphasized the need for tighter regulation and control over betting activities.
“Betting creates a lot of immorality within our youth. Something should be done to have some reign over it. Betting isn’t a profession, but people can put their salary on it,” Jantuah stated.
Lawyer Jantuah suggested that the funds raised from betting taxes should be directed toward investing in Ghana’s sports sector. He noted the country’s lack of investment in sports infrastructure and development, which he believes could be improved with better financial management of the taxes. “I would have thought those taxes should be channeled into sports. We don’t have money to invest in our sports,” he concluded.
