Election integrity at risk: Stakeholders must probe alleged “machomen” recruitment

Serious concerns have emerged regarding the integrity of the upcoming New Patriotic Party
(NPP) presidential primaries, slated for January 31, 2026. These concerns stem from a
leaked audio recording currently circulating on social media, which alleges a coordinated
effort to recruit unsanctioned security personnel in direct violation of party guidelines.

The Allegations
The recording purportedly features one Mohammed Amin Fuseini Batani, identified as the
“Be Bold Security Chairman.” In the audio, instructions are allegedly given to regional and
constituency commanders to recruit a minimum of 50 “commandos” per constituency. The
speaker claims to have met with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia recently to discuss
the need for “quick action.”

Furthermore, video evidence appears to show commanders actively compiling and sharing
lists of names and contact numbers for these militia groups.

A Violation of Electoral Guidelines
If verified, this recruitment drive constitutes a flagrant violation of the operational
guidelines set forth by the NPP Elections Committee. The rules governing the January 2026
presidential flagbearer elections are explicit: the use of “macho men,” private security
details, or unauthorized persons at voting centers is strictly prohibited.

The Threat to Democracy
The recruitment of such a force raises an alarming question: What is the intended purpose
of this private army?

Stakeholders and voters are right to fear a repetition of the violence witnessed during the
Ablekuma North election rerun. In that instance, unauthorized “macho men” were
documented harassing the electorate while law enforcement appeared unable or unwilling
to intervene. With the stakes higher than ever for the 2026 primaries, indications suggest
that business will not be “as usual.”

Call to Action
To preserve the sanctity of the ballot and the peace of the nation, immediate action is
required:

  1. To the NPP Election Committee: We demand an immediate inquiry into the
authenticity of these tapes and the alleged recruitment activities. The rules you
established must be enforced without fear or favor.
  2. To the Ghana Police Service: We call for a proactive security plan. The police must
assure the public that they will not stand aside while unauthorized groups intimidate
voters. These allegations must be investigated now, not after chaos has erupted.
  3. To Fellow Aspirants: All candidates have a duty to protect the democratic process.
We entreat other aspirants to join in demanding transparency and to bring these
grave developments to the attention of all local and international observers.
The credibility of the January 31st election hangs in the balance. These allegations must be
investigated with all seriousness to prevent the subversion of the people’s will.
