The Ghana National Gas Company Limited says it temporarily resorted to manual operations to sustain gas production after a technical fault disrupted its automated systems at the processing plant earlier in the week.
The development was disclosed by the Head of Corporate Affairs, Richard Ernest Kirk-Mensah, during an interview on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Monday, April 20, 2026.
He explained that the incident occurred on April 14, 2026, when a critical control component in the system failed, compelling engineers to act swiftly to avoid a prolonged shutdown.
“We our technical team did a risk assessment and found an alternative means… that is a manual approach for the first time to bring back the plant back on stream,” he said.
Mr. Kirk-Mensah noted that the intervention was unprecedented and highlighted the technical capacity of the team under pressure.
“For the first time this CPU got fault and through the technical brilliance they were able to start the plant through the manual which has never happened before,” he stated.
He further assured that production levels remained stable throughout the period of adjustment.
“We’re still operating at maximum capacity,” he said.
The Ghana Grid Company Limited and Ghana Gas had earlier confirmed that the fault originated from a failure of the Burner Management System (BMS) controller linked to the Heat Medium System, resulting in a temporary shutdown of the plant.
The disruption affected gas supply to thermal power plants, leading to intermittent power supply challenges in parts of the country before stabilisation measures were implemented.
