The Ghanaian government has committed to improving infrastructure and learning conditions in Integrated and Special Needs Schools across the country, as part of a broader strategy to enhance inclusivity and support for learners with diverse needs.
Speaking to heads of special schools in Accra, Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, emphasized the administration’s focus on building “world-class” special education facilities tailored to Ghana’s context.
“As we lay the foundation, what does it take for us to have a world-class special needs school and how should it look in the Ghanaian context?” the Minister asked. “We need to consider critical infrastructure upgrades that improve learning conditions, increase accessibility, and ensure consistent standards across schools.”
He highlighted the importance of assistive technology and teaching resources, including braille tools, hearing aids, mobility devices, and communication tools, to support effective learning. The Minister also underscored the need to provide reliable nutrition and welfare support for students, moving beyond temporary government grants toward sustainable funding.
“This is about ensuring every learner has access to quality education and the resources necessary to thrive,” he added.
