Lawyers for Gregory Afoko have expressed gratitude to Attorney General and Minister for Justice Dr. Dominic Ayine, for granting their client bail after nearly a decade in remand.
Afoko was arrested on May 20, 2015, in connection with the murder of Adams Mahama, Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who died after an acid attack.
His detention has been the subject of legal battles, with an earlier bail grant in 2019 later overturned. Afoko is now set to regain his freedom while standing trial.
However, the High Court in Accra on Friday has admitted Gregory Afoko to bail in the sum of GHc500,000 after nearly a decade on remand in the case in which he is standing retrial for the alleged murder of the late Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama.
In addition to the bail sum, the Court presided over by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons ordered him to produce two sureties one of whom is to be justified with a landed property.
As part of the bail conditions, Afoko is to report to the police – that is – the case investigator.
In his absence, the Court said he should report to the Regional Crime Officer (Greater Accra) or Director General – CID once every two weeks until the case is determined.
Speaking to GHOne TV’s court correspondent, Murtala Inusah, the Spokesperson for the Afoko family, Nana Yaw Osei Esq., described the decision as a relief for the family, the legal team, and concerned Ghanaians who have followed the case.
“This is good news for each member of the family, the legal team, and every well-meaning Ghanaian. By May this year, Greg would have been in custody for 10 years, and we think the court, having considered all these facts, has taken the right step in granting him bail,” he stated.
He also acknowledged the Attorney General’s Department for not opposing the bail application this time, adding that the decision will allow Gregory Afoko to receive much-needed medical attention while attending court from home.
“Granting him bail is in the right direction. We are grateful to the attorney general’s department, who, this time around, did not oppose the bail for the reasons I have stated. We can only be grateful. Greg can attend court from his residence. It’s an opportunity for him to get proper medical attention, which he has lacked all this while”.
