The 2024 Flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama has pledged to top up a court-ordered compensation to the victims of the violence that occurred in Techiman during the 2020 election period.
The former president stated that although the compensation could have been more, he was thankful that the judiciary had acted to bring some relief to the victims of the infamous killings that happened in Techiman.
In 2020, the National Election Security Taskforce announced that five persons had lost their lives resulting from electoral and post-electoral violence across the country. It was later revealed that the death toll had risen to 8.
While expressing his appreciation to the court, Mr. Mahama insisted that the NDC will open an investigation into the incident, explaining that there could be consequences if the individuals responsible were allowed to go scot-free.
“I’ve heard that a Ghanaian court has awarded a GHC275,000 compensation to the victims of the violence [in Techiman during Election 2020]. I thought it should have been more than that but I thank God the court has ruled that they be given something and when the NDC comes to power, we will do whatever we can to support the victims.
“But when the NDC comes into office, we will launch an investigation into why the incident happened because if we do not, the culprits might repeat these acts elsewhere. The accountability will serve as a deterrent to others,” former President Mahama said at a rally in Techiman.
He revealed that the next government under his leadership will provide a compensation package for the three families who lost their loved ones in Techiman during the previous election season.
