Women’s Dev’t Bank will make women financially independent – Awuah Darko

Kwame Awuah Darko, a key member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on the electorates in the Ashanti Region to reconsider their political alliance with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and start a new political journey with the NDC.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Ash-Town, located in the Manhyia South Constituency of the Ashanti Region, Awuah Darko praised the NDC for reducing the NPP’s votes by 10,000 in the 2020 elections in the constituency.

He urged party supporters to intensify their house-to-house campaigns to ensure victory for the NDC’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, and the parliamentary candidate for Manhyia South, Amonu Gyemfua.

Hundreds of NDC supporters in the Manhyia South Constituency participated in a health walk over the weekend as part of their campaign activities ahead of the December 7 polls.

The walk was used to demonstrate the party’s readiness for the election and to send a message to the NPP that they would not tolerate electoral malpractices such as multiple voting.

Addressing the mini-rally, Kwame Awuah Darko, former CEO of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST) and Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), encouraged NDC members to double their efforts in securing a win for the party.

He emphasized that the NDC has outlined several projects aimed at empowering women in small and medium-sized businesses if they return to power.

He highlighted that John Mahama, during his previous term as President, built the Kejetia Market to provide a business-friendly environment for traders.

Awuah Darko added that Mahama plans to establish a Women’s Development Bank to further support women in expanding their businesses.

“The vision of John Dramani Mahama is to develop and resource Ghanaian women in trade. Once our mothers and sisters are financially independent, there will be joy in every home,” he said, urging voters to support the NDC in the upcoming election to make this vision a reality.

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, Augustus Andrew Nana Akwasi, urged party supporters not to be distracted by the campaign of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, whom he referred to as a “joker.” He claimed that the NPP intentionally fielded NAPO to divert the attention of the NDC but stressed that their focus should remain on their own campaign.

Nana Akwasi also criticized NPP member Kennedy Agyapong, who had previously accused the NPP government of corruption but is now campaigning for them. He questioned Agyapong’s credibility and urged Ghanaians not to trust him.

National Vice Chairman of the NDC, Samuel Sarpong, expressed concern over the state of the country’s economy, urging voters to choose a change of government.

“Akufo-Addo has destroyed everything in the country. This election is a do-or-die affair because it is about our destiny,” he said, encouraging voters to work hard to take back control of the country’s future.

The party’s parliamentary candidate for Manhyia South, Amonu Gyemfua, assured supporters that the NPP would not be able to manipulate the election through multiple voting, as had allegedly happened in the past.

She emphasized that every voter would be allowed to vote only once. Gyemfua also highlighted the unemployment and poor infrastructure in the constituency and vowed to change this narrative if elected.

She further pledged to tackle the growing drug problem in the constituency by declaring war on the drug trade and creating a special fund to rehabilitate addicts.

The rally was attended by notable NDC figures, including former Director of Elections Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, former Obuasi MCE Kwasi Ofori Agyemang (also known as King Zuba), Dr. Frank Amoakohene regional secretary and Asokore Mampong MCE Nurudeen Hamidan among several others.
