Former President Donald Trump has escaped an assassination attempt that occurred on Sunday at his West Palm Beach estate. Trump International Golf Club, which is a short distance from his Mar-a-Lago estate, is where the incident occurred. Secret Service agents were routinely sweeping the course when they noticed a rifle barrel sticking out of a nearby thicket. Shots were fired in the suspect’s direction, and he ran as soon as the agents engaged him. This swift action stopped what could have been a fatal attack.

With an assault rifle in hand, the gunman was able to get as close as 300–500 yards to the former president before being discovered. County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw commended the agents for their prompt action, but the attack raised concerns about preventive security measures.

The culprit, identified as Ryan Routh, abandoned his firearm, and drove off in a black Nissan, and was pursued along the I-95 highway. His capture marked the end of the roughly 38-mile chase from the golf course. Two knapsacks and a GoPro camera, were found, indicating that the attack was planned.

This attempt on Trump’s life comes amid a wave of attacks and threats against public leaders in the United States. Trump had escaped a gunshot at a Pennsylvania event just two months ago.

Despite lacking a formal military history, Routh has been linked to worldwide recruitment efforts, particularly with Afghan soldiers fighting in Ukraine. His social media sites show a combination of pro-Palestinian, pro-Taiwan, and anti-China messages, as well as references to Covid-19 virus as an “attack”.

Early reports indicate that Mr Routh has a criminal background. According to CBS sources, Ryan Routh was prosecuted and convicted of several criminal charges in Guilford County, North Carolina, between 2002 and 2010. Carrying a concealed weapon, refusing arrest by a police officer, driving with a revoked licence, possessing stolen property, and hit-and-run driving are among the charges.
