Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have donated GHS 100,000 to the Black Queens in recognition of their remarkable performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The presentation was made during a special ceremony in Parliament on Tuesday, as the national women’s team paid a courtesy call following their return from the tournament.
Leading the gesture was Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who commended the team for their determination, resilience, and outstanding display on the continental stage. He handed over the cash on behalf of the Minority caucus as a token of appreciation and motivation.
The Black Queens made history by reaching the semi-finals for the first time since 2016 and clinching a third-place finish after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory over South Africa. It marked their first medal finish in eight years and a triumphant comeback after missing the last edition of the tournament and exiting early as hosts in 2018.
Their spirited performance has reignited national pride and renewed confidence in the future of women’s football in Ghana.
The GHS 100,000 donation is the latest in a series of tributes and rewards being extended to the team, as the nation celebrates a new chapter for the Black Queens and their journey ahead in international football.
