President Akufo-Addo and his colleague Guinean President, Alpha Conde, who have been appointed by ECOWAS to facilitate peace talks in Togo have asked the feuding factions in the Togo political impasse to table their immediate concerns for resolution of the issue.
Addressing a plenary session of both parties at the Presidential Auditorium of the Hotel 2 Fevrier in the Togolese capital, Lome, the President said three months since the last meeting of the parties, things seem to have gotten worse than it was before the mediation efforts begun.
The Ghanaian President said the mediation team is considering the development and will implement a proposed roadmap for a resolution.
President Akufo-Addo in an earlier call had asked the feuding parties to be led by the national interest.
“It is the Togolese people themselves, and not any outside forces, that will determine the future of your country. It is extremely important to recognise that the destinies of our own nations are in our own hands.
“And, that has to be the overriding concern of participants in this dialogue – the national interest of the people of Togo. It is important for the self-respect of the Togolese people that their leaders are seen to be capable of arriving at solutions that will advance the interests of the people of this country,” he advised.
Togo in recent times has witnessed a series of protests by opposition parties who have called for the resignation of President Faure Gnassingbe.
