Post-electoral unrest: Early concession by Bawumia a factor – Adomako Kissi

The Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has attributed the post-electoral violence, including the re-collation of some parliamentary results, to the early concession by the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Dr. Bawumia conceded defeat ahead of the Electoral Commission’s official declaration of the 2024 election results and congratulated the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, for winning the election.

While some party members viewed this as a premature decision, others praised it as a mark of true statesmanship.

Speaking on GHOne TV with Serwaa Amihere, Dr. Kissi suggested that the early concession might have contributed to the post-election issues.

He explained, “I think that from a political strategic standpoint, the flagbearer’s loss became very clear very early but for governance and for the party as a whole, we should have delayed in accepting defeat so that many or all the MPs should have been done.”

Dr. Kissi further elaborated that in future elections, any concession should be postponed until the completion of the collation process. He cited the example of the Okaikwei Central constituency, where the results were contested.

“It [Early concession] contributed to some extent to the happenings. Let me cite for instance, Patrick Boamah’s case where is 21,000 to 19,000. I think that if there was a bit of wait before the declaration or the concession speech, we wouldn’t have had the issues that Okaikwei Central had, they would have gone through the collation appropriately,” he added.
